What to Expect at Your First Massage

Updated July 30, 2026

A first massage can feel a little unknown. Here is a step-by-step of how a typical session goes so there are no surprises.

Before you arrive

Arrive 10–15 minutes early to fill out a brief health intake. Avoid a heavy meal right before, and drink some water. Mention any injuries, pregnancy, or areas to focus on or avoid.

What to wear

You undress to your comfort level in private and lie under a sheet or towel. You stay covered (β€œdraped”) the entire time except the area being worked on. Many people undress fully; underwear is completely fine too.

During the session

The therapist checks pressure early on β€” speak up anytime if you want more or less. It is your hour; it is okay to stay quiet, ask for a blanket, or skip an area.

After the massage

You may feel relaxed or a little lightheaded β€” stand up slowly and drink water. Mild soreness after deeper work is normal and passes in a day or two.

Tipping and etiquette

At spas, 15–20% is customary if you are happy with the session. At medical or clinical settings, tipping norms vary β€” when in doubt, ask the front desk.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to talk during the massage?

No β€” talk as much or as little as you like. Most therapists follow your lead.

What if I am ticklish or uncomfortable?

Tell your therapist. They can adjust pressure, technique, or avoid an area entirely.
